Angry Birds CEO Explains How The Company Embraces Piracy

I was in the audience to see Eliot van Buskirk interview Rovio's CEO, Mikael Hed, on Monday morning at Midem, but with so much going on at the conference (and then traveling), I'm finally getting a chance to write it up.

Hed made a point of telling music industry execs that not only was the music industry's approach to piracy entirely wrong, he believed Rovio's approach was much smarter: embracing the piracy.

ISP Refuses To Block The Pirate Bay

Previously, representatives from the Finnish music industry filed a lawsuit against Elisa, one of the country’s largest ISPs, demanding that it should block subscriber access to The Pirate Bay.

In a reply filed at the district court, Elisa has refused to comply, describing the blocking demands as “unreasonable.”

About a year and a half ago, I gave a presentation at a music industry event, where one of the points I tried to make was that those who were betting on digital sales as a savior were making a fool's bet.

However, many in the industry have been infatuated with this idea, even if the evidence always suggested that digital sales would only ever make up a small fraction of what CD sales used to bring in.
