Places Directory is Google’s Version of Yelp for Mobile

Finding gas stations, restaurants, clubs, and other locations while-on-the-go is a service that is high in demand.

There are also a lot of options for discovering this information as well: Yelp Mobile, GOOG 411 , MapsBuddy for the iPhone, and Urbanspoon just to name a few.

Yet a couple of Google engineers believed that there was a more efficient and more pleasant way to sift through all of the options these mobile applications presented.
