Several PC hardware vendors may have Windows 8 tablets powered by Intel's x86 "Clover Trail" system-on-chip (SoC) ready by this summer.

The H Open: "The developers of Scientific Linux have released version 6.0 of their Linux distribution for x86-32 and x86-64 systems."

Phoronix: "As we await the release of FreeBSD 8.0 to deliver a larger operating system comparison, we have carried out a fresh round of tests comparing Mac OS X 10.6.2 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both x86 and x86_64 editions) under a variety of tests."

TuxRadar: "Like Mac OS X, which we looked at recently, OpenSolaris is based on Unix; also like OS X, it's best known for running on a specific processor (in this case Sun's SPARC architecture) but now works on a range of architectures including x86.

Unlike OS X though, OpenSolaris is open source, so you can download it for free and start fiddling with it."

Moblin Zone: "The Linux kernel team is growing, both in total number of developers, and overall productivity, says the Linux Foundation.

In its annual "Who Writes Linux" study, the organization attributes the growth to emerging markets including netbooks, auto, and energy.

However, DD-WRT also has an X86 version that can be installed onto just about any generic PC."

Phoronix: "In a majority of the Leopard operating system from Apple outperformed Canonical's Jaunty Jackalope, but today we are adding in the results from an Ubuntu 64-bit installation.

As you can see from the results, the x86_64 version of Ubuntu Linux is more competitive against Mac OS X 10.5.6."
