Extremetech  Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:17

Ready for the Bleeding Edge Science Word of the Day? Optogenetics. It’s even weirder than it sounds, too: optogenetics is the manipulation of a cell’s functions with light (usually lasers).

Today, American startup Kendall Research has announced that it has made a wireless optogenetics device that the company’s founder calls “a wireless router for the brain.”

German Court Decisions Make Everyday Use Of The Internet Increas...

Techdirt  Wed, 01/04/2012 - 11:57

Perhaps there's something about the German legal system that encourages judges to push their interpretation of the law to the limit, without any concern for whether the results of that logic are absurd.

At least that is the impression you might get from two recent cases whose judgments both make the use of Internet by ordinary citizens increasing fraught with legal risks.

TorrentFreak  Thu, 12/22/2011 - 02:56

hooligansThe just-concluded case in Germany demonstrates perfectly that in some jurisdictions the standard way to deal with a file-sharing claim is guilty until proven innocent.

At 09:10 during a cold January morning in 2010, the defendant in the case says she was tucked up in bed.

A movie copyright holder, however, insists the retired single woman was illegally sharing files on the Internet.

How to make a Windows Time Capsule

Extremetech  Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:34

Despite its jawdroppingly exorbitant cost, there is no denying that the Apple Time Capsule is one of the best backup solutions available.

It’s wireless, so multiple computers can easily and conveniently use it, and OS X’s Time Machine software makes the entire backup process both easy and foolproof.

The only problem, of course, is that Time Capsules are really designed to work with Macs — you can use them with Windows PCs, but then it just becomes a glorified Samba share.

Didn't Take Long: Lots Of People Getting Sued By US Copyright Gr...

Techdirt  Fri, 06/11/2010 - 13:35

In the recent amicus filing by the EFF, Public Citizen and the ACLU in one of US Copyright Group's mass copyright infringement lawsuits, one of the points that they raised was that these mass filing strategies always snare a significant number of innocent users -- many of whom still feel the need to pay up, as it's cheaper to do so than to hire a lawyer and fight.

As ten of thousands of users in the UK, Germany and now the United States receive pay-up-or-else letters from lawyers who claim they’ve caught them sharing files, hundreds of individuals have protested their innocence, claiming no knowledge of the alleged infringements.

Often when people are wrongfully accused there is speculation that the individual’s wireless router could have been compromised and used to carry out an infringement.

However, many other instances of wrongful accusations go unexplained.

Top Tip: I need a basic wireless router with good range!

Extremetech  Thu, 10/16/2008 - 09:30

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good wireless router. I have installed and older SMC wireless router in our Church.

The church isn't really that big, but the signal is just inconsistant everywhere, even if your sitting still.

I think I just want to install a newer, better one with a better range. Any suggestions?? I don't have a hugh budget, so something in the $75-$100 range is about max what I can spend.
