Should You Live Blog/Twitter A College Class?

Techdirt  Thu, 09/18/2008 - 21:20

It's quite common these days for people to "live blog" or "live Twitter" different conferences or events they're attending, filling in others what's happening in near real time.

However, what happens when someone does that in a college class? Already, there are some professors struggling with the fact that students use the internet during class, but they're not at all happy about the idea that they might not just be using the internet to surf around -- but to report to others what's happening inside the classroom.

Should Apple Really Be Determining What Is Useful?

Techdirt  Mon, 09/08/2008 - 09:57

Ten years ago, if someone told you that they were going to create an encyclopedia that anyone could edit, at best, you would have decided the site would be of "limited utility." Five years ago, if someone told you that they were going to create a service to let people write 140 character updates, you would have decided the site would be of "limited utility." How about a site that will let you sleep on a strangers couch?

The Power Of Ambient Awareness

Techdirt  Mon, 09/08/2008 - 03:45

When I first heard of Twitter I didn't get it. I saw some friends using it, and tested it out for a bit, but again concluded that it just didn't make sense to me to be able to write short, 140-character, explanations of what I was doing -- or to read similar blurbs from other people.

But about a year ago, I started using it again, and quickly discovered that it was much more useful and interesting than I had ever expected -- often in totally unexpected ways.

AMC Upset That Fans Are Making Mad Men More Fun; Sends DMCA Noti...

Techdirt  Tue, 08/26/2008 - 16:30

It's really amazing how many times we see companies using the DMCA to shut down and stamp out fan efforts to help promote some content.

Take, for example, the latest situation pointed out by MG Siegler over at VentureBeat. Apparently, cable TV network AMC has been sending DMCA takedown notices to Twitter because some fans of its popular show Mad Men have created Twitter accounts for the main characters in the show.

I have nothing to say - but maybe PHP... - Johannes Schlüter

Planet PHP  Tue, 08/26/2008 - 04:31

As one can see on the frequent updates on this blog I don't have much to say, now there's this twitter thing, until recently I didn't understand it.

Whenever I visit the site I see mostly pointless (imo) stuff like "preparing my pizza", "eating my pizza", "done with my pizza".

The other thing I see there are people telling me what errors in their applications they are currently fixing.

I can't see why that's interesting. But as people seem to be interested I found out that I have stuff to say, too, or better my PHP has, since sometimes I have errors there, too.
