Extremetech  Thu, 06/11/2009 - 09:15

I just received my flamant new Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H motherboard and a Phenom II 940 Black Edition CPU, but when starting the "installation party"...

I noted the motherboard comes with a 8 pin 12V connector.

Top Tip: What do I do next for my new build?

Extremetech  Thu, 06/04/2009 - 13:15

Recently build a new PC and am wondering about the OS installation. The motherboard comes with a setup disc full of drivers, e.g., chipset, network, and other on-board capabilities; I can just run the OS install disc and let it take care of finding a workable driver, but suspect I should be installing some of the motherboard drivers first.

Would appreciate any help: experience, recommendation, or other.

Top Tip: My PC died!

Extremetech  Thu, 05/28/2009 - 11:15

Last night when I was in the middle of a game, my pc crashed, no blue screen, just off. I thought it might have overheated so I gave it a half-hour and tried turning it on again, nothing.

So I switched the psu off and went to bed, the next morning I turn the psu back on and try again, this time the case lit up briefly (<1 sec), either from one of the fans or the case lighting, then went dark.

Top Tip: No HDMI audio with Radeon HD 4550

Extremetech  Thu, 05/21/2009 - 09:15

My main setup is using HDMI audio from a Radeon HD 4850 into a 42" LCD and it had no problems. Intel chipset with Realtek audio.

For it to work I had to DL the HDMI audio drivers. I tried finding some on the Via site but had no luck. Is this a driver issue or a hardware issue?

The motherboard says it has HD audio but it might not have the right kind. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this working?

Top Tip: Installing OEM ram in laptops

Extremetech  Thu, 05/21/2009 - 09:15

I have a Lenovo laptop which has basically concked off :(. The Lenovo support guy told me that it was because of installing a non compatible RAM which led to an "display card ICU" going haywire (I had installed Transcend memory after checking the laptops specs from the companys website).

My wife is an amateur photographer and takes a lot of digital photos (and some videos with the video feature on her camera).

I am looking for a backup system that she can use to back stuff up.

Top Tip: 1920x1200 or 1920x1080?

Extremetech  Wed, 05/06/2009 - 12:00

Which one is going to be mainstream? I ask because I am going to purchase a new monitor on Memorial Day. Currently, I have a 1680x1050.

I was going to get a 1920x1200, but it looks like the 1920x1080 is gaining ground. Is this trend going to continue?

Top Tip: CMOS fails to recognize hard drive!

Extremetech  Wed, 05/06/2009 - 10:45

I've concluded that my HDD is no longer being detected (despite that fact that it has worked perfectly for the past month.) My motherboard will only recognize my DVD Drive if it is in channel 0 (SATA hookups, by the way).
