What's The Most Expensive WiFi You've Seen?

Techdirt  Tue, 10/25/2011 - 20:33

I do a fair bit of traveling and, while I try to avoid it, there are times when I really have no choice but to pay up for WiFi (and why is it always the expensive hotels that charge more for it, while the cheap hotels offer free WiFi?).

At times, the prices seem really crazy, but Parker sends over a screenshot of the cost of WiFi that he discovered at Toronto's International Centre, which seemed a bit extreme: $6.95 for just 30 minutes.

Or $99 for a full day. You could get the two day package for a bargain at $159.

Just What No One Needs Or Wants: Web Images With DRM And An Expi...

Techdirt  Tue, 01/25/2011 - 14:22

The BBC is reporting on a new project to create web images that "expire" after a certain period of time.

The thinking is that people who put photos up on social networking profiles may be embarrassed by them later, so, this way, the photo can only stay up for a set period of time and then no longer be viewable.

Of course, to make all of this work requires DRM. And, to make the DRM work means that anyone who wants to see such photos has to actually install a browser plug-in that they're unlikely to want to install.

Google Begins Blurring German Houses In Street View On Request

Techdirt  Wed, 11/03/2010 - 16:46

In one of the more ridiculous overreactions to screams of "privacy," Germany recently required Google to agree to "blur" any Street View images at the request of property owners.

That anyone could just drive/walk/fly by and view the same property perfectly clearly, didn't seem to register with those making the rules.

Apparently 3% of homeowners have demanded their homes be blurred, and Google has now blurred the images.
