Microsoft has announced a virtual launch event for SQL Server 2012, the next generation of its relational database.

Microsoft released previews of Service Pack 3 this week that support various editions of its SQL Server 2008 relational database.

Amazon Web Services attributed the outages to latency and connectivity issues affecting its Elastic Compute Cloud and Relational Database Service, but questions remain about what caused the failure.

InfoWorld: "One way for open source vendors to respond is through proprietary features. News that Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) provides a MySQL 5.1 relational database in the cloud has met with a lot of interest.

On the surface, this is good news for open source users and proponents."

As Microsoft prepares to reveal its plans for a more robust offering of its emerging SQL Data Services, an obscure two-person company last week launched its own cloud-based relational database service.

One thing you won't find underlying a cloud computing initiative is a relational database. And this is no accident: Relational databases are ill-suited for use within cloud computing environments.
