It is populated with many of the same titles as you would see in Apple’s iTunes App Store, from well-known applications to popular games.

Microsoft patches Bulldozer’s performance — we investigate

Extremetech  Thu, 01/12/2012 - 15:29

When AMD launched Bulldozer back in October, the company claimed that problems with Windows 7 thread scheduler prevented the CPU from delivering peak performance.

According to AMD, Windows 7 didn’t accurately understand how best to schedule threads to take advantage of the company’s shared architecture, and as a result “there are possibilities where opportunities for resource sharing or activate [sic] higher Turbo Core frequencies are missed.”

Digg / Tech Industry News  Mon, 09/26/2011 - 06:43

Some months back we covered the news that AMD had released its first revenue shipments of Llano. This was a big deal back then, as it was the first 32 nm based product from AMD, and one which could help AMD achieve power and performance parity with Intel in a number of platforms.

Llano has gone on to be a decent seller for AMD, and it has had a positive effect on AMD’s marketshare in laptops.

Koomey’s law replacing Moore’s focus on power with efficienc...

Extremetech  Tue, 09/13/2011 - 14:00

Moore’s law states that computer processing power doubles just about every 24 months (some accounts say 18).

This has been backed up with statistics and data aplenty — it’s almost as true an observation as the sky being blue.

There’s a new law on the block, though, and it might be even more relevant than what Mr. Moore said in 1965. Koomey’s law could be the equivalent of Moore’s law for the 21st centry.

Manage resources on overcommitted KVM hosts

Linux Today  Sun, 02/13/2011 - 09:04

IBM Developerworks: "A key benefit of virtualization is the ability to consolidate multiple workloads onto a single computer system.

This consolidation yields savings in power consumption, capital expense, and administration costs. The degree of savings depends on the ability to overcommit hardware resources such as memory, CPU cycles, I/O, and network bandwidth."

Digg / Tech Industry News  Thu, 10/21/2010 - 19:22

One word aptly describes AMD's latest Radeon HD 6800 series GPUs: refinement. AMD's goal was to drive cost and power consumption out of their architecture, along with enhancing its capabilities, features and image quality in next-generation DX11 gaming engines.

To that end we'd say the company has succeeded masterfully.

Nanosecond Scale Remote Timing Attacks On PHP Applications: Time...

Planet PHP  Wed, 10/20/2010 - 09:48

This article concerns the concept of a Timing Attack (described below) performed remotely over the internet or a local area network.

Specifically, it addresses Remote Timing Attacks based on timing differences from a few microseconds to as little as 1 nanosecond (one billionth of a second), a timescale which has been assumed to be impossible to detect over the internet due to the interference of “network jitter”.

Digg / Tech Industry News  Wed, 05/12/2010 - 03:30

The software giant wants to harness the power of machine learning to reduce power consumption. Another thing they want to do: “We can give you the traffic information without you having to ask for it.”
