A wiggly approach to smartphone keylogging

Two researchers from the University of California Davis, Hao Chen and Lian Cai, have successfully divined the keystrokes on an Android on-screen keyboard by measuring the wiggles, jiggles, and vibrations picked up by the device’s accelerometer.

This is significant because the data from accelerometers is not thought of as a potential attack vector, and is thus freely available to any application on any smartphone or tablet.

The idea of a “Facebook phone” isn’t a new one — it started circling around as half-joke, half-rumor over a year ago.

Then it actually showed up in real life, as a button added to an otherwise normal HTC Sense phone called the Salsa, which has been largely ignored since its debut.

Now it seems that the socialized horror has made a return, and it’s far more heinous than most would ever fathom.

Does this mean one has to crammed into (or onto) it at all costs? If you’re a former BlackBerry addict, perhaps it does.
