Launchpad Wants to Host Your Project

Linux Today  Tue, 07/29/2008 - 15:00

OStatic: "Canonical promotes Launchpad as being all about collaboration - which makes sense, since very few open source projects can thrive in the absence of an active community.

To further this, version 2.0 adds a formalized way to do code reviews online, with branches proposed for merging spawning their own discussion areas and mailing lists."

Control, Transparency, and Customer Contributions to Open Source

Linux Today  Tue, 07/29/2008 - 13:30

The Open Road: "While most open-source projects attract little to no outside developer interest, corporate-sponsored open-source projects start with an implicit handicap by demanding control of the destinies of their projects:"

Is Open Source Development Insecure?

Linux Today  Tue, 07/22/2008 - 08:30

Internetnews: ""In particular Microsoft blazed this path of having a security lead someone who is within the development organization and whose primary responsibility is security and that's critical," West argued.

Planet PHP  Mon, 07/21/2008 - 18:50

I find myself once again in Portland, OR at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention.

This year, I’m giving a talk on memcached. The talk is on the PHP track, but the concepts can apply in any of the other languages represented at OSCON, so if you’re interested in memcached and how to use it, stop by on Wednesday at 5:20pm.

Planet PHP  Sun, 07/20/2008 - 17:42

Ever since I mis-titled Terry Chay's talk, I've been thinking of putting together a presentation called The Internet is an Orgy.

Just like a real orgy, it can be a lot of fun but it just takes one person to screw everyone.

OpenDomain.org owner: Selfless FOSS helper or domain squatter?

Linux Today  Thu, 07/17/2008 - 07:00

Linux.com: "OpenDomain.org is an organization that offers to provide free use of certain domain names to worthwhile open source projects.

Ric Johnson, the leader of OpenDomain.org and the owner of dozens of domain names, says he has spent thousands of dollars registering those domains in order to prevent "squatters and phishers" from snapping them up.

He's keeping them safe so you can have a chance to use them.

Linux Journal: "...[W]e are witnessing the evolution of major open source projects into new kinds of players in the computing world, ones that require full-time staff not just to run them, but also to articulate what exactly they are trying to do *beyond* the code..."

How Should Mozilla Execute Its Vision?

Linux Journal - The Original Magazine of the Linux Community  Tue, 07/08/2008 - 05:09

The announcement by the GNOME Foundation that it is appointing Stormy Peters as its Executive Director confirms a suspicion that I've harboured for a while: that we are witnessing the evolution of major open source projects into new kinds of players in the computing world, ones that require full-time staff not just to run them, but also to articulate what exactly they are trying to do *beyond* the code.

Yes, We Need Users Too!

Linux Today  Tue, 07/01/2008 - 20:30

OStatic: "I'm a bit taken aback by this post by Jason Harris over on the KDE Developer’s Journals site. Harris says that 'KDE, like many other open-source projects, doesn't really need users at all, whether they are poisonous or not...'"
