About a week ago I stumbled upon this post by Syp about the reception of betas in gaming.

It sums it up quite clearly, when you release a new game (especially, but not limited to MMOs) - the beta phase has to be awesome.

Unless you're working on a major intellectual property (like Warhammer Online) or got a huge fan base (Blizzard) you can make or break your influx of users with the beta of your shiny new game.

There are plenty of bad things in the world. But I guess there is nothing that has such a drastic and dangerous impact on my life that software patents.

If patents are good thing in other industries can be discussed, but in the software industry its a clear cut thing: they hurt innovation, they hurt small businesses and they scare the shit out of me.

And if you are a software developer, they should scare the shit out of you too!

Retiring from PHP core - Lukas Smith

A few days ago I announced my retirement from PHP core via twitter and the internals mailinglist.

Actually I have always felt a bit weird calling myself being part of "PHP core" since in all the years I have never added any code to core, actually I have only removed some code as it was being moved to PECL.
