Is Android the most closed open source project?

If you were to ask an average Android fan what the best part of the operating system was, there is a good chance that their reply would be that it’s an open source project.

The fact that it’s freely available to use and work with is the cornerstone of the Android movement.

However, is Android as wide open as users think?


 

Intel’s x86 Android, smartphone, and tablet plans exposed

Last week, Intel announced that it had added x86 optimizations to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, but the text of the announcement and included quotes were vague and a bit contradictory given the open nature of Android development.

After discussing the topic with Intel we’ve compiled a laundry list of the company’s work in Gingerbread and ICS thus far, and offered a few of our own thoughts on what to expect in 2012 as far as x86-powered smartphones and tablets are concerned.

Tizen: Another mobile OS from the Linux Foundation

I was a little flummoxed to read about the launch of Tizen, a new open source mobile and device operating system based on Linux.

Earlier this month I wondered aloud about MeeGo, and this is the final nail in the coffin of that mobile OS, as Intel and the Linux Foundation have moved on to support Tizen instead.

And Samsung has joined in.

Hmmm. This is where it gets interesting.

AMD eschews smartphones, tiptoes towards tablets

Last week, Rick Bergman, senior VP and general manager of AMD’s Product Group, spoke at the Pacific Crest Securities Technology Leadership Forum.

During his talk, Bergman noted that while AMD was excited about the growth opportunities it saw within the tablet market, it had no plans to enter the smartphone space.
