Many PHP applications save files to a local filesystem. Most of the times for the bulk of readers here you'll likely only ever store files using US-ASCII encoding, either because your filenames are simply based on databasefields (as you should try in most cases), or simply because most of your users never have a need for non-english characters.

When you do though, it's important to know how operating systems cope with these characters.

Unsurprising, all of them do this differently.

This Thursday, March 4, the MCS Society will be holding our third Quarterly CompUtion! This fun programming competition is open to all students.

It will be held in University Crossings room 153 at 5PM. Anyone interested is welcome, regardless of skill.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Teams consist of 2-4 members. No registration is required, simply show up and join a team.

We will also be introducing a new event at this competition.

We will be holding a secondary Snake AI competition.

A Bit of Welcomed Scumm on Your Linux Machine

This might make me sound like an old fogey, but I really do miss the old games like Space Quest, The Curse of Monkey Island and Return to Zork.

The problem isn't that I don't have the games anymore, but rather that they were designed for my 386 computer running DOS.

Thankfully, I'm not alone in my fits of nostalgia.
