As Yahoo announces its second round of layoffs in two months, Google is announcing that it will be embarking on a hiring spree this year.

We first heard this morning from soon to be former CEO Eric Schmidt that the company will be adding 1,000 new employees in Europe.

And Google's SVP Engineering and Research Alan Eustace just published a post on the company's website announcing that the search giant will ramp up hiring to record levels in 2011.

Our firm was laying off 13 developers out of a total of 30 – almost half the team."

10 Things: "1: Leverage. Deployment of an insufficient amount of something to do that which was previously done with much more.

Example: After the layoffs, we can leverage our staff of three to cover the entire Eastern seaboard."

It seems as though layoffs and cutbacks are omnipresent these days, as more and more companies make the difficult decision to scale down in order to better compete in the recessed economy.

Such decisions are not easy or popular, but are nonetheless necessary — one is left to accept with great sadness that such things should come to pass.

That is until the rustling of countless cardboard boxes is muffled by the unmistakable sound of slot machines paying out the jackpot.

Application lifecycle management tools maker Borland Software CEO Tod Nielsen has left the company to join VMware as chief operating officer.

Bloggers and analysts on Monday poured cold water on rumors that Microsoft plans to lay off a substantial number of its employees.

Earlier this year, Yahoo rejected an acquisition offer from Microsoft priced at $33 per share. Its stock closed on Tuesday at just over $12 per share.
