When your instrument panel is an LCD display, the instruments could be made bigger or smaller, digital or analog.

The automaker could change them at the factory, the dealer could on demand, and maybe you could any time you wanted to.

Two automakers with opposing viewpoints are Chevrolet, which likes the idea, and BMW, with doubts about whether that’s tampering with the soul of the car.

To hit 40 mpg, conventional wisdom says you need an exotic powerplant: a hybrid, a diesel engine, or a tiny engine bulked up with a turbocharger.

The 2012 Hyundai Accent pulls off 40 mpg with a highly refined gasoline engine. The combination of improved fuel economy and greatly improved looks propels the $15,000 Accent from also-ran status to the front of the pack in desirability and sales among subcompacts.

The only flaw is limited availability of Bluetooth and USB.
