PHPDeveloper.org  Thu, 02/16/2012 - 10:16

The Voices of the ElePHPant podcast has released their latest episode, an interview with Chris Shiflett (as recorded in 2011).

In the interview they talk about things like:

Speaking at Boston PHP - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Tue, 02/14/2012 - 13:54

If you're going to be in or around Boston tomorrow (Wednesday) night, I hope you'll join me at the Microsoft NERD Center, where I'll be giving my first talk in more than a year and a half.

Learning JavaScript - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Tue, 02/07/2012 - 10:35

One of my goals this year is to acquire new skills, so I've decided to start by learning JavaScript.

As was the case when I learned html and CSS, it's a tricky endeavor, because I'm not exactly a beginner, and most stuff is geared toward beginners, which can make learning so inefficient that I lose my motivation.

PHP Advent 2011 - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Thu, 12/29/2011 - 13:42

The fifth edition of PHP Advent has come to a close.

Since 2007, we have published 120 articles, many of which are just as relevant and useful today as when they were first published.

This year, Sean and I decided to choose only authors who did not write for PHP Advent last year, and we made an extra effort to seek out authors who had never written for PHP Advent before.

We were pretty darn successful; our first-time authors include:

Stop SOPA and Save the Internet - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Wed, 11/16/2011 - 11:16

I'll level with you. I've not really paid much attention to all the chatter about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT-IP Act.

I'm busy, and I know anything to do with government policy as it relates to the Internet is going to be a big bummer.

This is definitely a big bummer, and if you're like me, our inaction sure hasn't helped.

Brooklyn Beta Opening - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Mon, 10/17/2011 - 07:36

Before I introduced the fantastic Viktoria Harrison on Thursday morning, I shared a couple of lessons I've learned over the years.

It wasn't really an opening keynote or anything, but I thought I'd share them here for anyone who missed it.

I'll try to blog a proper summary of Brooklyn Beta in the next few days.

1. Expectations are a blessing.

When a lot is expected of you, it's very easy to let the pressure of meeting those expectations get to you.

In fact, it can be paralyzing, and that's not good.

Steve - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Thu, 10/06/2011 - 08:23

In his own words:

Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Many thoughts and words have been shared, but none are more meaningful to me than these.

In the words of others:

We Need An Oktober(blog)Fest! - Stuart Herbert

Planet PHP  Mon, 10/03/2011 - 08:00

After Chris Shiflett‘s Ideas of March call earlier in the year, we had a fantastic period where the conversation moved from Twitter back to longer pieces on blogs.

Sadly, that has faded out once more.

We need another blog revival.

To (slightly) paraphrase Chris’s original call, it’s very easy to take part in Oktober(blog)Fest:

Fake Google SSL Certificate - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Tue, 08/30/2011 - 09:35

When I heard the news that a root CA named DigiNotar had issued a fradulent Google SSL certificate, the first thing I wanted to do was make sure my computer was safe.

This is a quick post to help you do the same.

Since I use a Mac, my first stop was Keychain Access.

I quickly found the DigiNotar root certificate.

Domain Registrars - Chris Shiflett

Planet PHP  Tue, 07/12/2011 - 02:12

I'm a domain addict.

For years, I've maintained a portfolio of more than one hundred domains, most of which were being reserved for later use.

I'm an imaginative person, and I love the Web, so I have lots and lots of ideas that require a domain name.

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're a lot like me.

Recently, I reduced the number of domains I own by about half.

I let a number of them expire, and due to the prohibitive cost of renewing an expired domain, I decided to use the opportunity to reduce my portfolio substantially.

I'm glad I did.
