Arrested Malaysian Blogger Freed Following Public Outcry

It's hard to figure out what the government of Malaysia is thinking in its ongoing trouble in dealing with critical bloggers (some of whom were so powerful that they got elected).

Last week, we noted that one of the more popular bloggers, whose blog had been ordered blocked by ISPs was arrested, just as the block on his blog was removed.

A telephoneA press release lands in our inbox: "Is Hoaxcall.com the Latest Form of Cyber-bullying?", it asks, pushing frantically at the big red controversy button implanted in every journalist's brain.

Except this isn't a campaign against the website, but an ad for the website itself: it's just trolling by the site's creator, Marc Waesche, to try and generate some heat.

Cynical?

It would appear that Google is discovering some of the differences in the legal system in India as compared to the US.

Just after we wrote about how Google (along with Microsoft and Yahoo) were sued over ads, there are some stories coming out about how an Indian court has ordered Google to hand over the identity of an anonymous blogger who was criticizing an Indian company, Gremach Infrastructure Equipments & Projects Ltd.



 

IFPI Admits It Screwed Up; Claims Mistakes Happen

Last week, we noted how the IFPI had sent a nastygram to a music blogger, forcing him to take down a song -- even though the musicians behind the song wanted it posted.

After the band contacted the IFPI, someone from the IFPI sent an apology to the site in a way that doesn't suggest it's really all that sorry:

IFPI was contacted by a member of the label who confirmed you were given permission to post the file on your site.

When I first setup this blog, I chose blogger because it would let me publish (using sftp) to a server at my alma.

This way neither was my data locked into any blogging service nor did I have to install any software on the server.
